Thought of the Day: "Start with the best opportunity available to you. If you make the most of what you have in front of you right now, better opportunities will become available as you go along." - James Clear

Tip of the Day: Do you need to add overhead costs to items you've purchased? In Microsoft Dynamics D365 Finance and Supply Chain, you can use the costing sheet to split overhead costs and allocate them to different general accounts and financial dimensions. For further details, please watch the video below.

Why Burden Item Cost with Overhead for Purchased items?

  1. True Cost Representation

•       Purchased items often incur additional costs beyond their purchase price, such as:

•       Freight and shipping

•       Handling and storage

•       Procurement administrative costs

Adding overhead ensures the total cost is captured, giving a more accurate picture of what the item truly costs.

2.       Better Costing and Profitability Analysis

•       When overhead is included:

•       Product pricing decisions are more informed.

•       Profit margins are calculated more accurately.

•       Cost of goods sold (COGS) reflects the full cost of acquiring inventory.

This helps ensure inventory accounting compliance.

3.       Cost Allocation Consistency

•       Applying overhead to purchased items ensures consistency in cost allocation across:

•       Manufactured items (which already include overhead)

•       Purchased items (which otherwise might appear artificially cheaper)

This helps in comparing internal production vs. external procurement.

Until next time, keep your head in the cloud, and keep working wise!
